As mechanical watches go, the Seiko 5's have a proven track record. They have been making them for decades, and there are plenty of old ones still on the go. The price point is good as well.

A mate of mine picked up one of these for a work watch last summer. It's a few mm smaller than his Omega (his only other watch as he is not a collector) but he thinks that it's a spanking watch for the money.
