Just curious.... am I "weird" regarding my "collecting" practices?

Hi folks - my first thread posting on the forum..... be "kind" 😁

I've been lurking/browsing since I joined and I've decided to dive in and ask some "daft" questions.

1) Is it just me, or is it normal for a watch collector, to hold on to all of the watches that they've owned, even after they've stopped working?

2) How many watches do you currently own?

3) What's your overall favourite watch? (So far)

4) Does anyone else just buy watches "just because" they "look nice" irrespective of the price? - and FWIW my most expensive watch to date cost probably about £600-£700, and that was a gift from my wife.

5) what's the cheapest watch in your collection and what's the most expensive? (FWIW- my cheapest is under a fiver and my most expensive is the above stated £600-£700) - will post some photos later.

Welcome to the forum. In answer to your questions ...
1) It's not unusual. They can be kept in a "to be repaired" box, if that makes you feel better.
2) ~60. I haven't counted recently. They breed overnight.
3) The one I'm wearing.
4) No, I'm more likely to get suckered into something that looks interesting. But, I almost always buy vintage and paying more than £500 requires anaesthetic.
5) I have watches that cost me nothing, either because I inherited them, or they were gifts. Most expensive £550, though I have pocket watches that cost more than that to repair.

We're all weird 😁

1, I have four non-functioning watches, three could be repaired, but for various reasons I no longer wish to wear them, and only keep them for sentimental reasons.
2, 18 watches, I've decided no more than 20, so I have sold some and given away others. I feel bad when working watches don't get worn, and I can just about give twenty a wear every month.
3, My favourite watch must be my Grand Seiko quartz, bought as 60th birthday and retirement present this year.
4, I certainly wouldn't buy a watch that I didn't think looked nice 🤔
5, £32 Rdunae quartz G10 homage from AliExpress, most of my watches are under £100, a couple were around £250, and then there is the GS which was £2000. I won't buy another really expensive watch, as I hope the GS will see me out.

Am I weird , probably , too many watches , wouldn’t hold onto any though I would just do a giveaway on here if they didn’t work I’m sure someone would fix it or use the parts

but yeah my wife looks at me like I’m weird when I say I want another watch and it looks like half the other watches I already have

From one new collector to another....a warm welcome to you @Shotokan101 (y)
I think I've always been a bit weird....an 'outside looking in' kinda guy all my life!

I've only been here a few days, but it really feels like home here!
Everyone has been very kind and supportive!

My collection (so far) is far from extraordinary, being mostly Casios of recent vintage, but for me, watches are about how they make you feel.
The feeling of knowing the time in our little corner of the planet, is quite a special thing, and I always imagine what it must have been like all those hundreds of years ago, glancing at a pocket watch and knowing the time, when others perhaps did not.
What a privilege it must have been!

Today, even with the amazing technological advances, watches are still worn and cherished whether they cost a lot or a little.
My personal collection consists of one Seiko, one Tissot (birthday presents), and about twenty Casios....and I love them all equally!

Happy collecting friend!(y)

At one point I used a timegraph app to take pictures of every watch , name them , the movement , if quartz what battery the movement needed , it got to a point at one time I had so many coming in going out I just l stopped updating it , I do now plan to actually make notes on paper about the collection of keepers and then what I like what I want etc make notes of new watches and stuff , I plan to be a lot more efficient next year and not so many impulsive purchase

I think 'weird' and 'normal' are two words you can throw out a window when it comes to watch collecting. ;) I have 20 watches. All of them but one work just fine. I have one Department store quartz watch that likes to start and stop randomly. I have probably had it for 30 years. In my eyes it still works, sort of. Being American, my least expensive watch is probably$20. The most expensive is $500. I don't see the point of paying more than $500 for a watch. My $500 watch retails for $700, but I bought it on sale in Aruba, tax free. Yes, I will buy a watch because it looks nice, but the price matters a lot. My favorite watch is this.

No such thing as a daft question, Sir -- except perhaps asking a group of weird watch collectors if it's normal to be weird.

Q.1. There is a spectrum of types of people here. Probably 70% are "flippers" (those who buy and sell watches all the time in pursuit of a better collection). A few of us sell rarely, or even not at all. This means that purchase considerations are different. I tend toward the latter group -- I even still have the watch I got for Christmas 65 years ago.

Q.2. Seventeen.

Q.3. No favourite watch, but definitely a favoured group -- see my footer.

Q.4. If the question means "do you buy with your heart?" -- yes.

Q.5.
