That worked out nicely - G-Shock

As you've probably gathered from some of my posts, I've become quite the Casio and digital collector these last few months. I've accrued about 15 digitals including getting some batteries in old 90s ones I still had.

Anyway, I thought I'd go for a third G-Shock with an all black one. Nice and subtle and a good daily watch, so I got ordering from Amazon. It arrived but I wasn't impressed, the box seemed iffy, the tag had been cut off and it had a weird hand written label on the bottom.

The barcode was also stuck over the original on the box so I couldn't work out if it was a fake or used. I suspect it was possibly a return of some kind but it was more used than I was willing to accept.

So instead I opted for a slightly different model as I'd been looking at reviews on these. It's a GBD-200UU-1ER, catchy name. Arrived in the right box, factory sealed and the first thing to grab me was the screen. As in, 'wow' was my initial thought. That screen is excellent and super legible especially compared to other negative displays.

I'll be honest, this watch has some features I'm really not fussed about. I'm pestered all day at work so have no intention of getting more alerts via my watch so I've not bothered pairing with my phone. I'm also not fussed by my step count, mainly because I don't need to be depressed by it hahaha

A good display, good build quality, dual time (for work) and subtle looks work nicely for me. I think it looks great. Nice backlight on it too.

I've seen some reviews say the features are a bit slow or aren't perfect. I'm old fashioned and am really not into smart features, I just liked the look and am hugely impressed with this as an actual digital watch!

Yeah it's what really wowed me when I first got it out of the box. I have a couple of other negative display digitals and legibility isn't the best, some slightly better than others.

This really stands out. There's no shadowing so it's crisp from every angle and the numbers seem to be almost flush with the crystal. With just the main time on screen rather than dual time, it's as good as any traditional LCD. :)

yup, recent acquisition. best negative digital display possibly have ever seen.

bought mine for my previous and remarkably short lived job. where obvious use of a phone would be a bit of a no no but smart watches tolerated. i just have mine set up for emails and whatsapp notifications.

the strap could be better but the big plus is the easy use buttons much much better than the usual square gshock type. a solar and radio synicing version of this would be the doggies doo dahs.

It is that display that's impressed me most. As I was scrolling through the options I genuinely thought, 'wow' as the sharpness was impressive and the legibility.

Think this will be staying on my wrist for a while now. It's got a nice solid feel to it as well. Not that other G-Shocks don't but it's slightly weightier than the two DW-5600s I've got. Not to wear but to handle anyway.

You're right it is, and I like the word 'rubbierer' haha. It's far more supple and I like the fact that the holes in it make it breathable and work as the holes for the buckle.

I keep eyeing up the display on it though, it's fascinated me since I took it out of the box and started pressing buttons haha.

Dear @Alex_225, I really like that G-Shock; must have been a nice surprise after the disappointment of the earlier purchase. I presume you returned the "used" watch and got a refund; did you get the second watch from Amazon, I wonder?

Although the negative digital display on your new G-Shock is pretty awesome, I just wonder if you have the option on the watch (or on any digital watch) to change the display to a positive version?

Sadly there is no option to do that, probably come at some point in the future

Very helpful and interesting, dear @Alex_225. The negative display on your watch certainly looks pretty good and my query was in the abstract in the sense that I wondered if LCD watches ever had a "press-button" option to switch from negative to positive dispay (or vice versa). I also take heed of your helpful comment about Amazon and third party sellers.:)

short answer you're judgefullness is no.
spot of slightly geeky reading here - How LCDs Work | HowStuffWorks
its a hardware thing and based on some pretty nifty physics and engineering - but hardware none the less which is pretty fixed for it to do the job.

that said of course they could just as easily build the 'positive' version, why they dont offer the option is beyond me.

this screen looks different to more traditional G's due to the huge number of tiny pixels rather than the quite small number of big chunky digit segments and other icons we may be more familiar with.

have to say its pretty good and still an easy read even in quite low lighting, and thats without the led backlight function to boot.
