Okay, what exact year was it? There have been several generations of diesel 320d, all of those since around 2004 have been extremely tractable and had at least 163hp so I would suggest you may have been driving a very early one. Try a more recent one and you will be pleasantly surprised. BMW are consistently ahead of the game with their engines which are usually very near the leading edge of performance and economy. I would agree with comments about the earlier models being a bit pokey inside or perhaps badly equipped but it is rare to hear criticism of how the engines perform since they are usually as good or better than the competition in any given era, thought obviously diesel engine tech has come on leaps and bounds in the past 20 years. My current 2.0l diesel BMW has 221hp and the exact same torque output as the M135i petrol and goes like SOAS.
I am glad the Sun considered it important enough to place the story of a middle aged man having a wee ahed of the terrorist outrage in Germany. I am really no fan of Evan but my contempt for the Sun knows no depths. Gutter press doesn't begin to describe it, sewer press maybe?
